6 Things to Look for in an Accounting System

Choosing a new accounting system is a big step for any business – pick wisely, an you could save on time, choose poorly, and it could spell disaster for your business.  Managing your incomings and outgoings is critical in keeping afloat, regardless of the size of business you run.  A good accounting system should be able to easily manage your accounts and give insight into the financial health of your business.

What a company needs from an accounting system can very from business to business.  In this blog, we’ve shared 6 things you should look for when choosing a new accounting system.

    1. Cloud-based Accounting SoftwareMost modern accounting systems are now cloud-based meaning that you can access your accounts anytime, anywherer, and on any device.  In comparison to desktop-based software, cloud-based accounting systems offer many advantages, including:- Easy to set up – no need to install software.  Just sign-in to your account and you’re ready to go.
      – More up to date – cloud-based solutions are easier to keep up to date than desktop versions.
      – Real-time data – data is synchronised across all your offices and devices, meaning that you are always working from the most up-to-date data available.
      – Easy to maintain – maintenance will be carried out by your cloud software providers so you can relax knowing everything is taken care of.
    2. ScalabilityWhen it comes to choosing new accounting software, it’s essential to think ahead.  Will the solution still be appropriate when your business grows, or will it struggle to cope with the added demand?  Look for an accounting system that can grow as your business does.
    3. Technical SupportWhile this may not be top of mind when considering accounting software, it can be vital.  As when we try anything new, we’re bound to have questions or run into technical difficulties, so you’ll want to ensure you have access to support when you need it.
    4. IntegrationsBefore you commit to new accounting software, check that it can integrate with your current ERP or CRM systems.  Most high-quality accounting systems will come with a range of integration options that should be easy to implement.  Being able to connect your systems can streamline your data, helping you save time and reduce the number of errors made.
    5. Financially Viable OptionsCost is perhaps the most critical factor when considering the purchase of any new software.  While it can be tempting to go for the cheapest option available, often you can get what you pay for.  Before you jump into any contracts or commitments, take time to work out the numbers, what is a realistic budget form what you’re looking for?
    6. User-friendly InterfaceYou’ll be moving in and out of your accounting software daily, so having a clear and easy-to-use platform is a must.  If you struggle to navigate the platform easily and can’t find what you’re looking for when you’re looking for it, it’s a sign that this isn’t the solution for your business.  Look for a solution that is clearly laid out and, if you can ask for a demo of the software before you buy.  Often demos will give you first-hand experience of the platform, helping you to get a feel for what using the software is actually like.
