Venture Forth…Into the Cloud
The Forth Road Bridge is to be closed until 2016.
For those not based in Scotland the Forth Road Bridge is the lifeline for commuters travelling between Edinburgh and Fife. Closing the Bridge for any length of time spells disaster for certain sets of commuters and businesses.
Being from the West Coast of Scotland this affects me little (although I do have to contend daily with Europe’s second busiest and most congested bridge – the M8 Kingston Bridge). That said, I am not without feeling towards my East Coast compadres in their time of suffering.
The cost will be substantial to many businesses whose employees and customers rely upon the bridge for travel. Tales are already being told of the massive economic impact on Scotland… up to £50m according to some sources. That will impact on all of us North of the border.
Of course, the impact could be mitigated easily if some of those businesses most affected operated on cloud based business software. Accessible from any location and any device – including mobile or tablet – the requirement to come into the office is greatly diminished.
Likewise, clever businesses who have partner or customer access on their cloud based software can operate with minimal disruption to services. People from across the UK will not notice any impact on service or performance as a result of the closure (unless you run a haulage business from Fife).
Minimising the down time caused by the closure is really the best course of action when all is said and done.
