Stay Creative – Manage Less, Do More, Achieve Better Profitability
I have quite a few friends in the creative sector – a lot of them agency owners and senior directors. Most of them love being creative and hate running the business.
Anyone who has read the E-Myth will know, there are three conflicting personalities involved in running any business: Entrepreneur, Manager and Technician. The entrepreneur is always thinking long term – what’s the next big opportunity, how can I move closer to my vision. The technician focuses on what is happening now and getting the job in hand completed. The manager effectively runs the business, deciding on tactics, mobilising staff, improving profitability etc
The creative person who has started their own business is often hung up on being a technician; the expert; the person who does the creative and does it well; the one who produces “the goods”. And so they should, it’s what they are good at after all. They are the life blood of the business. Without their creative insight there would be no business and no product. But the business of running an agency isn’t just about churning out award winning work. It’s also about finding clients, creating proposals, raising contracts and invoices, managing staff, paying bills, credit control and other bothersome tasks. Crucially it’s also about generating profit.
What if you had a business system that took care of a lot of the managerial stuff so that you could concentrate on the creative? Consider a system which could do the following:
- Automate proposals and contracts and email directly to clients
- Raise and send invoices
- Tell you when invoices are due and remind you when you have unbilled time accrued against a client
- Automates dunning routines for credit control
- Gives you a real time view of your management accounts from your dashboard
- Measures client profitability and cost per sale
If you are working flat out managing the business and are finding no time to be creative anymore, there are business systems out there to help you. Ones which have been designed specifically to help you avoid getting bogged down in the management of your business so you can spent more time being creative – being the technician or the entrepreneur you want to be.
