Flexible Working Cloud 9-5pm
Last year Michael Gove, whilst still Education Secretary, called for longer school days and a cut in the length of holidays, in order to improve performance and make life easier for working parents. He said, “The structure of the school term and the school day was designed at a time when we had an agricultural economy…it was also at a time when the majority of mums stayed home. That world no longer exists and we can’t afford to have an education system that was essentially set in the 19th century”. According to the Department for Business, Innovations and Skills almost 20 million people have applied for flexible working after the law to widen eligibility was changed.
It has been a fact of working life for quite some time that employees struggle to fulfill their obligations to work and family simultaneously.
It doesn’t have to be this way…..
It’s coming up to that time of year when flexibility is forefront in the minds of working parents and their employers up and down the UK. Some things are pre-determined at this time of year such as; 6 weeks of solid rain (starting from the first day of the school holidays); pricing of hotels and flights rising by unprecedented amounts and of course the ubiquitous calls of “I’m bored” echoing through houses. Mandatory time off work need not be one of them.
This is where cloud 9-5pm comes into its own.
Offering flexible working has never been simpler for those businesses who are already running on cloud based software. There are multiple options available for small businesses – whether it’s a cloud based CRM only solution for the sales force or a more robust ERP solution. Our own business runs on NetSuite which is one of the UK’s fastest growing cloud software solutions. It’s because we have this kind of innovative software that all the working parents in our business are able to meet the demands of both caring for children during school holidays and work.
Not only are these solutions often cheaper than on premise software (due to the reduction in IT, hardware and upgrades) but they also reduce costs as a result of minimised traveling time and improved staff engagement. For those parents who need to spend more time at home through the school holidays, rather than taking unpaid leave or using up those precious holidays, they can take advantage of cloud software to log on from their own home while the kids are playing in the garden (read: watching Spongebob and eating junk food straight from the fridge). Ability to work should not be compromised by location.
Assuming staff are able to keep the laptop away from small sticky fingers, there is no reason why allowing employees to work from home will have any kind of detrimental impact upon business costs or down time.
So the solution need not be as complex as applying for compressed hours or changing the entire schooling system. Businesses who are open minded, and equip their employees with the right tools to do the job, will remain quids in during the Summer.
