Working Over Christmas…Sort of
Christmas can be a tricky time of year for some companies. Apart from some obvious sectors, such as retail and leisure, whose business ramps up over the festive period, it tends to quieten down. Not necessarily stop. But slow down. It’s hard to have a “slow down” mode when you are in business though.
Business is either open….or not….
Phones are manned….or not….
Service as usual….or not…
How do you square that circle in a business where a few of your clients might want access to your service or product in say, the couple of days between Christmas and New Year?
This is where cloud really comes into its own. I have worked in business before where there has been a Christmas rota. One member of staff, per day, manning phones or processing orders.
The old way of working assumes that you are going to be “present”(no pun intended) at your place of work when “on duty”.
The new way of working says otherwise. With cloud computing the requirement to commute to your place of work is null and void.
Imagine logging on to your system from your front room, basking in the peaceful glow of your Christmas tree lights, sipping a mulled wine while you casually fulfilling the few post-Christmas orders/queries/requests which have landed in your inbox.
The ON/OFF way of working is slowly becoming obsolete. Not necessarily a means to get staff working on their days off, this is instead, a neat compromise which meets both objectives of business and employee over the holiday period. If you must work over Christmas, better to do it from home.
